I have no idea how much of Apple's revenue comes from only 1 product line (ex ipod), but I would guess it's pretty well balanced. Too many companies face the same issue; have an excessive amount of sku's that account for less than 5% of income. All they do is add complexity.

I totally agree on the focus thing. But, that doesn't mean you can't have a million of variation of articles. Take Head & Shoulders for example, they can focus/own "anti dandruff" but I don't think it will hurt to have different types of variations in order to meet the different consumer preferences. Another example is Apple, they do everything from phones, computers, mp3-players - but the focus/own "design/creativity".

Positioning is not the same thing as minimizing your product portfolio!
